CEO Dr. John McCabe: Longtime Leader of Upstate University Hospital

John McCabe, MD, has served as CEO of Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse, N.Y., since 2009. He has been at University Hospital and SUNY Upstate Medical University for more than 20 years in various leadership roles.

In addition to his role as hospital CEO, Dr. McCabe is the senior vice president for hospital affairs at Upstate Medical University.McCabe

During his time as CEO, Dr. McCabe has overseen multiple changes and improvements at the hospital. Last year, Dr. McCabe oversaw Upstate's acquisition of Community General Hospital in Syracuse, N.Y. This year, he led the launch of an electronic medical record system, which allows patients to access their medical records from smart phones, tablets and home computers.

In his 23-year history at Upstate University Hospital, he has also developed an emergency medicine residency training program and overseen the expansion of the hospital's emergency room, among other accomplishments.

Dr. McCabe is also a leader at the national level, having served as chair of the board of directors of the American Board of Medical Specialties, the organization that oversees the certification of physician specialists in the United States.
