CEO Dr. John Chessare: Proven Record of Leadership Success at GBMC

John B. Chessare, MD, began serving Towson, Md.-based Greater Baltimore Medical Center as president and CEO in June 2010. Dr. Chessare has been an active and visionary leader of GBMC. As president and CEO, he oversees a 281-bed acute-care, non-profit hospital; Greater Baltimore Medical Associates, a group of more than 40 multispecialty physician practices; Gilchrist Hospice Care; and the GBMC Foundation.

John ChessareWith a proven track record as both a strong executive and a highly respected physician, Dr. Chessare has led clinical and administrative teams toward improvement in health outcomes and patient and staff satisfaction as well as reduced wait times and profit maximization. He has been instrumental in a number of quality and performance improvement initiatives, including the implementation of computerized physician order entry and the creation of system-wide clinical quality and patient safety measures.

Dr. Chessare joined GBMC after working as a consultant with regional and national healthcare organizations focusing on operational changes to improve patient flow and patient satisfaction while reducing costs. Additionally, he served as a faculty member for the Institute of Healthcare Improvement and the Institute of Healthcare Optimization in seminars on improving hospital operations.

From 2005 to 2008, Dr. Chessare served as president of Caritas Christi Health Care System's Caritas Norwood Hospital in Boston. Caritas Christi is now Steward Health Care System. He was also senior vice president for quality and patient safety of the entire Caritas system and served as the system's interim president from May 2006 until May 2008. Dr. Chessare has also held several executive-level leadership roles at other health organizations. From 1998 to 2005, he served at Boston Medical Center/Boston University School of Medicine. From 1994 to 1998, he worked at Albany (N.Y.) Medical Center/Albany Medical College and from 1983 to 1994, he served at the Medical College of Ohio in Toledo.

Dr. Chessare earned his medical degree from the University of Rome in Italy in 1979. He completed his pediatric residency at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center in Worchester where he served as chief resident in pediatrics and completed fellowship training in general academic pediatrics at Boston Children's Hospital/Harvard Medical School.
