Viewpoint: Internet of Things, genomics are the future of healthcare delivery, says Yale health system CIO

Jessica Kim Cohen -

Lisa Stump, senior vice president and CIO of Yale New Haven Health System and the Yale School of Medicine in New Haven, Conn., spoke with the Enterprisers Project about her forecast for the future of digital health technology.

Yale New Haven Health System has been using telehealth to connect with patients remotely, including a Tele-ICU service that the system debuted last year. Moving forward, Ms. Stump is interested in expanding telehealth services by combining devices with Internet of Things technology; for example, by connecting with fitness and medical devices in a patient's home to collect data about their health and lifestyle.

Ms. Stump also believes that leveraging data through human genome sequencing will become more common in the coming years. As an example, Ms. Stump said she believes genome sequencing will become a regular part of patient care.

"It will become as routine as other data points we capture, like a child's growth chart," she told the Enterprisers Project. "And it will allow your care team and you, as patient, to make more informed decisions about your health."
