UPMC sinks $35M investment in patient data company medCPU

Pittsburgh-based UPMC will take majority ownership of medCPU in a move to advance the health system's analytics and population health capabilities, reports Pittsburgh Business Times.

New York-based medCPU captures and analyzes patient data via text inputs, dictation and electronic medical records. The company serves more than 60 hospital clients.

"MedCPU is a perfect example of the kind of technological innovation nurtured by UPMC Enterprises to help us transform the delivery of care, not only at UPMC, but around the world," said Tal Heppenstall, president of UPMC Enterprises, in a statement.

As a result of UPMC's investment, medCPU plans to open a Pittsburgh office and hire 20 additional engineers to advance product development, according to the article.

UPMC's new ownership role in medCPU will take effect in the second quarter of 2016, according to Pittsburgh Business Times.
