Tampa General Hospital notifies patients of compromised data due to unauthorized access

An employee at Tampa (Fla.) General Hospital accessed the hospital's EMR and printed off face sheets of 675 patients, sheets of paper containing patient names, addresses, birth dates and Social Security numbers, according to a WTSP report.

The face sheets were for patients who had surgeries scheduled between Oct. 3, 2011 and Aug. 7, 2014. The employee did not have authorized access to the EMR.

The hospital first learned of the data breach after the Tampa Police alerted the hospital that someone they had arrested who was unrelated to the hospital had four of these face sheets with him, according to the report. An internal investigation identified the unauthorized access by the hospital employee. The employee has been fired.
