Samsung holds patents in digital health, genomic analysis

Samsung Electronics filed nine patents in the fields of digital health and genomic analysis in 2014.

The South Korea-based technology company has a patent in a genomic analysis technique for diagnosing certain leukemias, a method using DNA structure to perform diagnoses, a stem cell treatment for those who have suffered brain trauma or spinal cord injury and a method to diagnose use fatigue in watching videos, according to IPWatchDog. The company also holds two patents for 3D digital health displays, one for optimizing television displays for phone calls and another for improved touch screen display.

Samsung has also filed patents in the wearable technology market. One patent includes a method for a low-power wearable, allowing for longer battery life, according to the report.

Samsung has reportedly been downsizing its presence in the medical device industry — it tranferred the division to Samsung Medison in December 2014, according to a Business Korea report. Samsung Electronics purchased the majority of Samsung Medison in 2011 but failed to make the business profitable in the three years following, ultimately transferring the division back to the medical technology company, according to the report.
