Report: Healthcare Still "Highly Dependent" on Paper Records

Over the past few years, CMS has poured more than $17 billion into its electronic health record incentive programs in a quest towards an all-digital health system. Despite these efforts, a report from IDC Health Insights reveals 38 percent of documents used in healthcare today are on paper.

Additionally, 62 percent of healthcare professionals said the volume of paper documents at their organization either increased or remained flat over the past year.

Depending on location, "typically less than 50 percent of a patient's health information is available in an electronic format," said Daniel Pidutti, senior director of healthcare solutions at EMC Information Intelligence Group, in a HIMSS Wire report.  "Despite investments in EHR systems, healthcare is still highly dependent on paper.
