Portland, Maine invests in medical informatics research, jobs

Portland, Maine, will use $50,000 in grant funding to assess the current state of healthcare informatics and evaluate the potential of building an informatics training and research center in the area.

The Health Informatics Assessment Project, part of the city's Growing Portland initiative, has identified healthcare informatics as a high-growth area with the potential to bring more investments and jobs to the city.

"Projects like this are exactly why we developed the Growing Portland collaborative," said Portland Mayor Michael Brennan. "Along with our initiatives in the marine economy and local workforce development, Growing Portland is looking carefully at health informatics, which we believe can bring high-paying jobs to the city and region. [The funding] will help us to investigate this potential, and begin to build the programs and resources to attract people and investments to the region."

Several local healthcare providers contributed money to the project, including InterMed, Maine Health and Maine Medical Center.
