Population health driving increased use of remote patient monitoring solutions, study says

The increased emphasis on population health management has spurred many hospitals to adopt remote patient monitoring solutions, with as many as 66 percent of hospitals and health systems indicating they have deployed such techniques, according to a new report from Spyglass Consulting Group.

The report, called "Trends in Remote Patient Monitoring 2015," found hospitals have deployed RPM solutions to manage value-based risk associated with supporting large populations with complex chronic conditions, such as congestive heart failure, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, diabetes and hypertension.

Here are three more findings from the report.

  • Eighty-four percent of providers responding to the survey who had deployed RPM were using mobile devices, primarily tablets, to support chronically ill patients recently discharged from the hospital.
  • The majority of providers said they plan to evaluate patient "bring your own device" options and wearable technologies, including smart watches and activity trackers that can be used to support chronically ill patients.
  • Seventy-nine percent of providers surveyed said they are embracing data analytics and decision support tools to transform raw data into actionable insights to help monitor and manage value-based risk associated with population health.

Spyglass Consulting Group derived its findings from more than 100 in-depth interviews with healthcare organizations involved in telehealth and telemedicine over a two-month period beginning in May 2015. Providers included multi-hospital delivery systems, standalone community hospitals, ambulatory centers, home health agencies and government organizations.
