Physician share data with patients more so than with other physicians

The percentage of physicians electronically sharing data is on the rise, and new data indicates they are more likely to share data with their patients than with other providers.

In 2014, 57 percent of physicians electronically shared data with patients, up from 46 percent in 2013, according to an ONC data brief. More than half of providers (52 percent) exchanged secure messages with patients and 47 percent gave patients access to view, download or transmit their electronic health information.

Comparatively, 42 percent of physicians electronically shared health information with other providers, up slightly from 39 percent in 2013.

Not only do physicians share more data with patients, but the growth in this trend is more pronounced than the growth in sharing data with other providers. There was a 30 percent increase among physicians sharing data with patients from 2013 to 2014, compared to a 7 percent increase among physicians sharing data with other physicians from 2013 to 2014.
