PCORI announces up to $150M in funding for clinical research networks

The Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute announced two funding opportunities to support the development of clinical research data networks.

The data networks make up PCORnet, the National Patient-Centered Clinical Research Network that is used for conducting comparative effectiveness research and other health studies. The end goal of PCORnet is to be a resource to support studies using clinical data gathered in real-world settings.

This is the second round of funding offered by PCORI. The initial investment of $93.5 million was directed toward developing and expanding 29 individual networks. This round of funding will total $150.7 million, advancing the ability of the networks to support a number of different types of studies and health research.

"We're excited to announce this funding opportunity for the second phase of PCORnet," said Rachael Fleurence, PhD, director of PCORI's CER Methods and Infrastructure Program, the program which oversees PCORnet. "We've made tremendous progress with our current 29 networks during the first phase of this national initiative, and we look forward to capitalizing on the infrastructure built so far. PCORnet will begin supporting research, both observational and randomized, in phase II and we're excited about its increasing capacity to generate evidence that will help patients and those who care for them make better informed decisions."
