ONC Awards Contracts to Test Effectiveness of EMRs

The Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT has contracted with two companies to assess the effectiveness of electronic medical records and health information exchange, according to Federal Business Opportunities announcements.

Surescripts was awarded a $1.4 million contract to measure clinical transactions, including e-prescribing and laboratory results, that occur through EMRs. Surescripts will collect data and report detailed information on the number of healthcare providers that utilize clinical transactions.

SK & A Information Services was awarded a $2.5 million contract to survey healthcare providers on their acquisition, deployment and adoption of EMRs. SK & A Information Services will collect data and report information describing providers' levels of adoption and use of health IT by medical specialty.

Both organizations will report data by geography to ONC every quarter through Dec. 2014.
