Nintendo to Enter Healthcare Industry

During a strategy announcement Thursday, Nintendo's chief executive announced the company is developing a product that will help users monitor and improve their health.

No specific details were given, except that the product would not be wearable, would not be an extension of Nintendo's Wii Fit Balance Board exercise game and would not be used in the living room, according to a report in The Wall Street Journal.

"We have now redefined entertainment to mean making it fun for people to improve the quality of their lives," Chief Executive Satoru Iwata said, according to the report.

More information on the product will be disclosed later this year, according to a report in The New York Times.

Nintendo's announcement follows three years of financial losses. The plan to enter healthcare was not enough to buoy investor confidence in the company, and Ninetendo shares closed down 4.3 percent following Mr. Iwata's announcement, according to the Times.
