NewYork-Presbyterian awards funding to 3 pediatric apps

Three winners have been named in NewYork-Presbyterian's Pediatric Appathon, including an educational app for parents and an app that makes discharge papers accessible through mobile devices.

Nearly 80 participants formed 17 teams that submitted innovations to the panel of NYP and New York-based technology leaders. App proposals were evaluated on design, user benefit, scalability and creativity, among other factors. First place, which includes a $5,000 prize, was awarded to a group that offers parents an educational walkthrough of the stages of care for a hospitalized child. It includes a digital version of the 40-page visitor guide provided to patients of NYP, as well as a number of other instructions for things like dietary recommendations and information about prescribed medications.

An app that gives families a day-to-day snapshot of their child's hospital experience took second place, and a $3,000 prize. The app aims to put parents at ease knowing exactly who is taking care of their children when and includes access to physician notes and results from tests and treatments. Third place was awarded to an app that uses a barcode to digitize discharge papers for parents, making their child's information accessible from mobile devices and includes appointment reminders and the ability to connect with care team members from home.
