NewYork-Presbyterian awards $40k to winners of pediatric app challenge

NewYork-Presbyterian has recognized three apps as winners of the InnovateNYP: Pediatric App Challenge it began in February.

Over the course of 10 weeks, 16 teams designed and developed apps geared specifically toward improving pediatric care. A panel including Daniel Barchi, chief information officer of NewYork-Presbyterian, and Lawrence Stanberry, MD, pediatrician-in-chief for NYP, among others, selected the three finalists.

First place, which comes with a $25,000 prize, was awarded to fhirStarters, a platform that helps parents manage medications for their kids without manually entering prescription information, which helps promote adherence.

Second place, and $10,000 in prize money, went to Teen Screen, an app that provides mental health screening for young people between the ages of 12 and 18 and tracks data for users and their providers. Teen Screen includes tools for suicide risk assessments, such as a patient questionnaire, and has a clinician-facing component that allows providers to collaborate on cases.

Third place went to NYP Care Companion, along with a $5,000 prize. NYP Care Companion aims to help young patients recover faster by engaging them and their families throughout treatment. It consists of two interconnected platforms, one for parents and one for kids, and provides comprehensive information about progress and conditions.

"We continuously strive for exceptional patient experience and quality of care for our patients and their families," Peter Fleischut, MD, chief innovation officer at NewYork-Presbyterian, said in a statement announcing the winners. "By challenging such inventive minds, we are primed for success in developing tools that can drastically improve how patients and providers use technology."

The three finalists will have the opportunity to collaborate with NewYork-Presbyterian to refine their platforms for potential implementation within the organization.
