Mount Sinai Hospital piloting Parkinson's tracking app

Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City is running a trial that allows patients to track their Parkinson's disease conditions through an app.

The app, MyHealthPal, works on iOS devices and functions as an analytics platform that aggregates day-to-day data points into a dashboard for the patient. The app was developed by Mike Barlow, a software developer who also has Parkinson's disease, according TechCrunch.

Users can donate their anonymous data to a database in return for a share of the revenues that the data generates to scientific research institutions and charities supporting research. The company says its software is HIPAA-compliant and will enable research and data scientists to access more data, according to the report.

The app's development company, which has offices in New York City and London, says it plans to explore partnerships with other hospitals in the U.S. and U.K. in coming months. Its current partnership with Mount Sinai aims to confirm data validity, provide patient insights, test medication adherence and improve health outcomes, according to myHealthPal's website.
