Medical Management insider data breach affects multiple hospitals: 5 things to know

Medical Management, a medical billing and coding company, has informed an undisclosed number of emergency department patients that their personal information may have been accessed by a former employee, according to an eSecurity Planet report. Here are five things to know.

1. The call center employee worked for the company from February 2013 to March 2015. On March 16, federal law enforcement informed the company that the employee copied and sent personal information to a third party, according to the report.

2. The employee was fired shortly after the company became aware of the internal breach.

3. The personal information disclosed includes names, dates of birth and Social Security numbers, but not medical history, according to the report.

4. The affected patients are being offered a free year of identity theft protection services from Kroll.

5. The total number of hospitals affected by the breach has not been released, but the following have released statements, according to the report:

•    Conemaugh Health System (Johnstown, Pa.).
•    Englewood (N.J.) Hospital and Medical Center
•    Grand View Health (Sellersville, Pa.).
•    Holy Name Medical Center (Teaneck, N.J.).
•    Jefferson Hospital (Jefferson Hills, Pa.).
•    University of Pittsburgh Medical Center
•    The Valley Hospital (Ridgewood, N.J.).
•    White Plains (N.Y.) Hospital
