Massachusetts General Hospital upgrades smartphone app that helps locate nearby ERs

Boston-based Massachusetts General Hospital is releasing its EMNet findERnow mobile app once again with some upgrades. The app aims to make it easier for patients to find the emergency room that is closest to them.

When opened, the app launches a map showing the ERs closest to the user. It provides both the distance and directions to a number of ERs. The new version of the app helps users identify the ERs most likely to be prepared to provide pediatric emergency care.

A baby icon appears next to ER facilities, indicating which facility has one of the following:

•    A pediatric trauma center
•    A pediatric burn center
•    A pediatric coordinator
•    A pediatric emergency-focused emergency center

The app is available for download on either iPhone or Android devices.

"By combining our research-quality data with mobile devices' GPS technology, we can provide a powerful tool for users experiencing an emergency or for people planning to travel to other parts of the country," said Carlos Camargo, MD, MGH's Emergency Medicine Network director and Conn Chair in Emergency Medicine at the hospital.
