Kansas Department of Health to Takeover Kansas HIE

The Kansas Health Information Exchange announced that Gov. Sam Brownback signed a bill incorporating the Kansas Health Information and Technology Act, which will transfer responsibilities currently required of the KHIE to the Kansas Department of Health and Environment.

Meetings to fine-tune the transition plan begin early next week.

In September 2012, the exchange's board voted to relinquish powers to oversee regulation of patient electronic medical records in the state, according to The Wichita Eagle. Joe Davison, KHIE chairman, told The Wichita Eagle that while the KHIE created the necessary infrastructure, it soon realized that sustainability was a major problem.
