Just how big is Cerner's new Trails Campus?

Cerner broke ground on its $4.45 billion Trails Campus facility in November 2014, a project that includes building 16 buildings covering 4.7 million square feet. Given its massive size, a Kansas City, Mo.-based lawn care company LawnStarter wanted to find out what other prominent structures would fit inside the Trails Campus.

The company measured average dimensions of popular destinations, many of them Kansas City-related. According to LawnStarter, Cerner's Trail Campus would hold:

  • 2,136 average Starbucks shops
  • 26 average Walmart Supercenters
  • 12 Nelson-Atkins Museums of Art
  • 668 Joe's Kansas City Bar-B-Que restaurants
  • 6.8 Sprint Centers
  • 47 Truman Library and Museum complexes
  • 5.5 Union Stations

Additionally, the project is expected to create up to 16,000 new jobs in the next decade, making it the largest economic development project in Missouri's history.

The construction project will be built in 16 phases, the first two expected to be complete by the end of this year.
