Jay Wohlgemuth named chief healthcare officer of HealthTap

HealthTap, a virtual care company based in Palo Alto, Calif., named Jay Wohlgemuth, MD, as its chief healthcare officer.

Dr. Wohlgemuth comes to HealthTap from Quest Diagnostics, where he served as chief scientific officer and senior vice president of research and development and medical. He has also has previously held positions at Genentech and CareDx.

He said his biggest attraction to HealthTap was the potential to make a significant clinical impact on the healthcare industry. HealthTap delivers an end-to-end platform that connects patients to physicians through telemedicine while helping patients schedule coordinating care with face-to-face appointments. Dr. Wohlgemuth said he saw the opportunity for the platform to improve outcomes for patients while reducing costs for providers.

"The platform is amazing, but the proof point is that we have 68,000 physicians attached on one side and a staggering number patient interactions on the other side," Dr. Wohlgemuth said. "The proof point is that you've brought together a massive network of docs with a massive network of patients who are all looking for answers."

Dr. Wohlgemuth will work with HealthTap Founder and CEO Ron Gutman as well as the physician network to solve problems and improve care delivery while ensuring the platform complies with regulations. He said he plans to use big data generated by the platform to improve the quality of care as well as forge external relationships with academic and medical entities, distribute the platform to healthcare systems and insurance companies and integrate data from multiple sources, such as patient-generated data and data drawn from wearable devices.

"Information is a very important part of what we're doing," Mr. Gutman said. "Part of it is what you call telemedicine, and this notion of virtual care is important, but it's not enough. Medicine is not one and done. Medicine is a process."
