Innovative new contact lenses dispense medication while worn

Researchers have created a new type of contact lens capable of delivering medication to an individual's eyes while worn, according to the Washington Post.

A study published in the journal, Ophthalmology, examined the effects of contact lenses infused with medication verses traditional daily eye drops used to treat glaucoma in monkeys. Results showed the contact lenses were at least as effective as the eye drops, according to the article.

The lenses retain a thin film that holds the medication in the periphery of the lens, keeping the center clear. The middle part can be designed to correct nearsightedness or farsightedness, or with no refractive power for individuals with normal vision, according to the article.

Janet Serle, a specialist at Icahn School of Medicine at New York City-based Mount Sinai, said the lenses are more convenient for some patients and ensure patients receive the appropriate amount of medication with each dose, according to the article.
