How Cerner will integrate with HealthKit

Cerner will integrate with Apple's HealthKit platform through its own consumer-focused mobile platform, Cerner Wellness, and app, HealthyNow.

The integration will allow data collected by HealthKit through wearables or apps outside Cerner's mobile offerings to be accessible to Cerner systems and Cerner-using professionals. "This integration enables the feeding of key health metrics into our platform for sharing with health coaches, earning of incentive points and identification of new opportunities to improve your health," wrote Brian Carter, senior director and general manager of Cerner Personal Health, in a blog post.

The HealthKit platform already integrates with Cerner's main competitor, Epic, through Epic's MyChart app. EHR vendor athenahealth is also rumored to be integrating with HealthKit.

HealthKit officially launched Friday after discovery of a bug delayed its scheduled Sept. 17 launch.
