Homeland Security releases guidance for IoT security: manage vulnerabilities, promote transparency

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has released a list of suggested best practices to help guide developers, manufacturers and providers establish security for Internet of Things devices.

Here are their six suggestions:

1. Incorporate security at the design phase. This might include using hardware that includes security features and building a device's software using the most recent operating system.

2. Advance security updates and vulnerability management. This might include coordinating software updates and disclosure of vulnerabilities between third-party vendors.

3. Build on proven security practices. This might include identifying sector-specific guidance and participating in information sharing platforms.

4. Prioritize security measures according to potential impact. This might include identifying a device's intended environment and authenticating all devices connected to the network.

5. Promote Transparency across IoT. This might include conducting risk assessments on third-party vendor sites and sharing software bills of materials among vendors and manufacturers.

6. Connect carefully and deliberately. This might include advising consumers on intended network connections and building controls to allow manufacturers and service providers to disable network connections.
