HIMSS honors Mercy in Cincinnati with stage 7 award

Four hospitals and all associated ambulatory clinics in the Cincinnati-based Mercy Health system have received HIMSS Analytics' Stage 7 Award, the highest level of electronic health record progress a healthcare organization can attain.

Recognized hospitals include Mercy Health – West Hospital and The Jewish Hospital – Mercy Health in Cincinnati, Mercy Memorial Hospital in Urbana, Ohio, and Mercy Defiance (Ohio) Hospital.

John Hoyt, executive vice president of HIMSS Analytics, praised Mercy Health's use of IT to unite its disparate care sites. "Mercy showed excellence in establishing the 'Mercy way' with common order sets, a common medication formulary, etc., across their deployed acute care locations in Ohio and Kentucky, as well as for their 1,300 physicians in over 200 locations," he said.

Since 2005, HIMSS Analytics' EMR Adoption Model has tracked EMR adoption in hospitals and ambulatory clinics throughout the country. The eight-stage model cumulates with stage 7, in which paper records are no longer used. Stage 7 organizations are also able to share patient information electronically and have advanced data analytics capabilities.

Currently, only 186 U.S. hospitals have reached HIMSS' stage 7.
