Google exec takes over for Todd Park as nation's CTO

President Obama announced Thursday Megan Smith will become the nation's third CTO.

Ms. Smith is replacing Todd Park, who resigned his post to move to the West Coast, though will continue to serve in the Obama Administration by recruiting technology professionals for government projects.

For the past nine years, Ms. Smith has been the vice president of new business development at Google, managing early-stage partnerships, pilot programs and other projects and notably leading the acquisition of the Google Earth and Google Maps platforms.

Ms. Smith's second-in-command will be Alexander Macgillivray, former general counsel and head of public policy at Twitter. As deputy CTO, Mr. Macgillivray will focus on Internet policy, intellectual property policy and other key areas.
