GE Healthcare to hire 500 in new Massachusetts facility

GE Healthcare, an arm of industry giant General Electric Co., announced it will hire 500 employees at a new facility in Marlborough, Mass.

The company has already hired approximately 100 more employees for the former Hewlett-Packard site in Marlborough, Mass., where it plans to establish a life sciences base, according to the Boston Globe. The area around the facility is also being renovated and will eventually include apartments, townhouses, a hotel and shops, which will primarily benefit GE, Quest and Boston Scientific employees, who work nearby, according to the report.

GE Healthcare's life sciences division sells bioreactors, diagnostic tools and other biotech drug manufacturing equipment. The Marlborough facility is set to be operating at full capacity in 2017 and will hire an additional 100 employees in the year leading up to that.

GE Healthcare follows the trend of several other life sciences companies relocating employees to Massachusetts. Shire plc, a drug manufacturer, moved more than 500 jobs to Lexington, Mass., and Baxter International Inc. staffed a new facility in Cambridge, Mass., with approximately 400, according to the report.
