Columbia University's Data Science Institute hires Microsoft Research exec as leader: 4 points

New York City-based Columbia University's Data Science Institute appointed Jeannette Wing the Avanessians Director of the institute as well as professor of computer science.

Here are four points:

1. Ms. Wing, who is currently corporate vice president of Microsoft Research, will assume her new roles in July.

2. Prior to joining Microsoft Research, she worked at Pittsburgh-based Carnegie Mellon University and the National Science Foundation, where she oversaw the computer and information science and engineering directorate.

3. She serves on the steering committee for the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency's Information Science and Technology Board.

4. The Data Science Institute was founded in 2012 with seed funding from New York City's Applied Sciences NYC initiative, and today includes more than 200 affiliated researchers.
