California launches teladermatology platform

Patients in California can now access board-certified dermatologists through telemedicine for simple diagnostics, treatment plans and prescriptions.

The California Skin Institute collaborated with Pittsburgh-based Iagnosis, a digital dermatology solutions company, to create a teledermatology platform through its website. Specialists can diagnose more than 3,000 skin, hair and nail conditions through the platform, according to a news release.

The platform requires no software installation for patients, operating through a camera or smartphone connected to the Internet. It is HIPAA- and HITECH-compliant, according to the news release.

The service costs $85 out of pocket or through a Flexible Spending Account or Healthcare Savings Account, as it is not eligible for coverage under insurance in California yet. The average patient receives a treatment plan in less than 24 hours and can pick up prescriptions at his or her preferred pharmacy, according to the CSI's website.
