athenahealth, University of Toledo Medical Center partner to develop inpatient EHR

athenahealth and University of Toledo (Ohio) Medical Center are working together to develop the vendor's EHR for deployment in the hospital, which will be the largest acute care hospital to use athenahealth's EHR, according to a Fortune report.

Historically, athenahealth's platform was geared toward physicians' offices. In January 2015, athenahealth acquired RazorInsights, a cloud-based EHR and financial solutions provider for rural, critical access and community hospitals. Then in February 2015, athenahealth purchased the EHR platform built by Boston-based Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. These two transactions suggested the vendor's intent to move into the hospital market.

At the University of Toledo Medical Center, athenahealth plans to develop its EHR for providers in both ambulatory and hospital care settings. Since 2014, the University of Toledo Physician Group has been an athenahealth client.

"Working with athenahealth…is an excellent opportunity to position our providers already using athenaNet to impact transitions of care across UTMC's ecosystem," said David Morlock, CEO of University of Toledo Medical Center. "We are embracing this opportunity to fully implement the cloud across our inpatient and outpatient environments."
