AHA Names Most Wired Hospitals of 2014

The American Hospital Association's magazine, Hospitals & Health Networks, has recognized hospitals and health systems across the country for their exemplary use of health IT.

The list is based on the 2014 Most Wired Survey, a national assessment of providers' IT capabilities. The providers recognized as this year's Most Wired are those that have not only implemented and maximized benefits from foundational technologies like electronic health records and computerized physician order entry but have begun to explore business intelligence, population health and patient engagement solutions.

Most Wired system University of Colorado Health in Aurora is one such system that is beginning to leverage their strong IT foundation to improve patient care and prepare the system for success with value-based reimbursements and population health management. "We are using real-time algorithms within and outside of the EHR to look at risk, and predict and inform clinical and operational pathways," said CIO Steve Hess in a news release. "While still early, we are starting to see patterns related to how our patients are interacting with our system and the reimbursement impact of those changes. It is important that our systems are set up to provide the complete patient picture and to ensure that the patient is getting the appropriate care in the appropriate setting at the right time."

The list also includes 20 hospitals and health systems recognized for being "advanced" in all areas of the Most Wired survey. Tampa General Hospital, one of the 2014 Most Wired Advanced providers, credits their place among the 20 to successful IT investments and a general focus on using technology to improve the patient experience. “Strategic technology investments have led to this award,” said Balaji Ramadoss, TGH’s chief technology officer, in a news release. “Our distinguished medical, nursing and support staff leverage our technology to provide the best patient care possible.”
