800 patients' records compromised at Jefferson Hospital: 4 things to know

Jefferson Hills, Pa.-based Jefferson Hospital is notifying about 800 people treated at the hospital's emergency department that their personal information may have been compromised.

Here are four things to know about the data breach.

1. The information was illegally disclosed by a former employee of Medical Management, an external medical billing company.

2. Federal law enforcement authorities identified the Medical Management employee, who was terminated, as responsible for copying personal information from the billing system over the past two years, and then disclosing that information to an unauthorized third party, the hospital said.

3. Personal information that was potentially compromised includes names, dates of birth and Social Security numbers.

4. There is no evidence that information about medical histories or treatments was disclosed, according to the hospital.
