80% More Hospitals Reaching HIMSS Stage 5 or 6 With Electronic Health Records

Despite the economic recession, U.S. hospitals are continuing to see the value of investing health information technology to improve the quality, safety and effectiveness of patient care, according to a new analysis of HIMSS Analytics' Electronic Medical Record Adoption Model.

The HIMSS Analytics EMRAM scale is recognized as the standard to measure acute-care hospitals' adoption of health IT.

According to the analysis, the amount of U.S. acute-care hospitals achieving stage 5 or stage 6 of the seven-stage EMRAM increased by more than 80 percent in 2011. The amount of hospitals achieving stage 7 increased 63 percent.

Under the EMRAM scale, stage 6 and stage 7 hospitals are fully prepared for provider-to-provider or facility-to-facility interoperability, as well as increasing the provider or facility's ability to provide electronic health data reporting to public health and immunization registries to support population heath review.

According to the report, updated data reflecting EHR adoption up to the end of December 2012 will be released later in January and is expected to show even greater EHR implementation rates.
