8 findings on improvements in the ICU using telemedicine

Research in American Journal of Critical Care finds telemedicine significantly augments nursing care in intensive care units.

Researchers surveyed approximately 1,200 nurses online regarding their perceptions of using telemedicine in the ICU.

Here are eight key findings from the study.

1. Nearly 66 percent of nurses said tele-intensive care improves collaboration.

2. Sixty-three percent of nurses said tele-intensive care helps them accomplish tasks more quickly.

3. Just over 63 percent said it improves job performance.

4. More than 60 percent of nurses said telemedicine in the ICU improves communication.

5. Six out of 10 nurses said telemedicine in the ICU is useful in nursing assessments.

6. More than 45 percent of nurses said telemedicine helps improve care by providing more time for patient care.

7. Nurses identified benefits of tele-intensive care, including its ability to detect trends in vital signs, ability to detect unstable physiological status, provide medical management and enhance patient safety.

8. Barriers identified by the nurses include audio and video technical problems, interruptions in care, telemedicine perceived as interference and staff attitude.
