7 statistics on IT salary, job satisfaction & perspectives

The healthcare IT job market appears to be flying a steady course, with few layoffs expected and an overall optimistic forecast for the next year.

Greythorn, a recruiting firm specializing in technology jobs, released its Healthcare IT Market Report for 2015, outlining the job market for health IT jobs. Here are seven key findings, statistics and things to know about the current market and its projected future.

1. Three in 10 respondents said they do not expect any layoffs over the next 12 months. One in 10 said they are currently "hiring aggressively" and another one in 10 said there will be "significant headcount loss."

2. The overall sentiment regarding health IT opportunities are positive. Sixty percent of respondents said they feel optimistic about such opportunities over the next year. Eighteen percent said they are extremely optimistic, 11 percent said they are pessimistic and less than 1 percent said they are extremely pessimistic.

3. Two-thirds of respondents said they expect a salary increase of up to 6 percent in their current role within the next year, but 20 percent said they do not expect any salary increase.

4. Basic salary levels were across the board, from $30,000 to more than $160,000. The two most common salary ranges, at 18 percent each, were between $50,000 and $69,999 and between $100,000 and $119,999.

5. Benefits are a significant factor for IT employees when considering a new role — 49 percent of respondents said medical/vision/dental/life insurance would be a deal breaker, followed by approximately 21 percent who said the same for telecommuting opportunities.

6. The majority of respondents are happy with their jobs, with 86 percent indicating they are either satisfied or highly satisfied with their current roles.

7. For the 14 percent who are either dissatisfied or highly dissatisfied with their current roles, the most common reasons for dissatisfaction were career progression (20 percent), manager/supervisor (16 percent), the challenge (13 percent), salary (11 percent), questionable ethics (11 percent) and other (22 percent).
