6 Statistics on Consumers' Views on Data Ownership

Almost half of consumers either do not believe they fully own their health data or do not care who owns it, according to a survey by the Health Data Exploration Project.

The majority of those surveyed (91 percent) use some sort of health or fitness mobile app and enter data into it on a regular basis. When asked about who does, or should, own the data they enter:

  • 54 percent of respondents believe they own all their data
  • 30 percent believe they share ownership with the company that collected the data
  • 4 percent believe the company owns all the data they entered
  • 13 percent do not care who owns their data

Additionally, 45 percent of respondents said they share their health data with others, either online or in person.

The survey results were based on responses from 465 American adults collected in August 2013.
