50% of Hospitals Plan to Upgrade Mobile Health Capabilities

The "2012 Healthcare Mobility Trends" report (pdf) by Aruba Networks, a provider of network access technology, reveals a majority of hospital IT staff support plan to upgrade capabilities for mobile health.

The report is based on an online survey conducted from December 2011 to January 2012. Health IT professionals of United States and international hospitals were surveyed.

Key findings include:

•    Eight-five percent of health IT professionals support the use of personal devices by physicians and hospital staff at work;
•    Sixty percent reported their hospital supports electronic medical record applications on mobile devices;
•    Ninety-three percent reported their hospital owns independent network infrastructure;
•    Fifty percent plan reported their hospital plans to expand wireless network capabilities within the next 12 months.

Additionally, many hospitals have the capabilities to support a variety of mobile devices:

•    Eighty-three percent of health IT professionals report their hospital supports, or plans to support in the next 24 months, clinician use of Apple iPads;
•    Sixty-five percent reported their hospital supports iPhones and iPod touches;
•    Fifty-two percent reported their hospital supports Blackberry devices;
•    Forty-six percent reported their hospital supports Android tablets or devices.
