The Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society has awarded two individuals the inaugural Kate Granger Compassionate Care Award.

Named after Dr. Kate Granger, the award honors those who have demonstrated high-touch and compassionate care. In 2011, Dr. Granger, a British physician, learned she had terminal cancer. Although she died five years later, she dedicated her life to opening up the discussion around compassion in healthcare.

The Kate Granger Compassionate Care Award is presented by HIMSS North America. This year's recipients are:

  • Deborah Dahl. Ms. Dahl serves as vice president of patient care innovation at Phoenix-based Banner Health. She is also a global ambassador for telehealth with the Banner Health telehealth team.
  • David Weingard. Mr. Weingard, an entrepreneur who was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at age 36, left his position at Microsoft to found Fit4D, a New York City-based company that aims to help individuals with diabetes and other chronic conditions.

The awards will be presented at the HIMSS Awards Gala on Feb. 21.
