What 10k new Medicare enrollees a day means for healthcare

In a record-breaking wave of enrollment, about 10,000 people now sign up for Medicare each day, according to Forbes, and this "silver tsunami" is expected to continue to hit Medicare for the next 15 years.

This demographic shift is impacting the healthcare industry as reflected in the following four trends, as presented by Forbes.

  • By 2030, 20 percent of the population will be eligible for Medicare compared to 13 percent today, and by 2035, the Congressional Budget Office predicts 80 million Americans will be enrolled in Medicare if trends continue.
  • Medicare Advantage is a rapidly growing market in the insurance sector.
  • Physicians are aging — and retiring.
  • Home health job growth has skyrocketed 60 percent in the past 10 years, compared to overall U.S. job growth of 6 percent.
