West Penn Allegheny Health System posts $9.7M loss

West Penn Allegheny Health System, a five-hospital system based in Pittsburgh, reported a $9.7 million loss for the three-month period that ended March 31, compared with a $14 million loss for the same period of 2014, according to a Pittsburgh Post-Gazette report.

Although the system continues to operate in the red, Dan Laurent, a WPAHS spokesman, told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the system's operating numbers have improved over the last five quarters.

WPAHS reported revenue of $445.2 million for the three-month period that ended March 31, up slightly from revenues of $444.3 million for the comparable period of last year.

Inpatient admissions at the system's facilities were up in the three-month period. Mr. Laurent told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette the increase in admissions and outpatient registrations "reflects our efforts to expand capacity and reach of our programs in the community."
