UK hospital rejects donation from men dressed as female nurses, calls portrayal 'demeaning'

A hospital in Ludlow, England, turned down money raised by local men dressed in stereotypical nurses uniforms because it found the costumes "demeaning," according to The Telegraph.

As part of fundraising efforts by the Ludlow Hospital League of Friends, men dressed in low-cut fake nurse's blouses and short skirts went around with donations buckets and collected $3,200 for the Shropshire Community Health NHS Trust, intended for Ludlow Hospital.

"The presentation of men dressed as female nurses in a highly-sexualised and demeaning way is wrong, very outdated and insulting to the profession," Trust officials wrote in a letter to the League of Friends.

However, the League of Friends contended that they have performed this fundraiser for 30 years without complaint. The organization called the donation refusal "absolutely ridiculous."

"The event has always run with the full knowledge and support of the hospital and primary care trust management with participation by NHS staff," said Peter Corfield, chairman of the League of Friends. "The whole thing is a light-hearted fundraiser, which has raised between £2,500 and £6,500 each year and so over that period of time it's a very tidy sum."
