Top 10 costliest medical conditions in 2016

Multimillion-dollar stop-loss claims rose 68 percent between 2013 and 2016 for Wellesley, Mass.-based Sun Life Financial, according to its fifth annual 2017 Sun Life Stop-Loss research report.

The report comprised stop-loss claims reimbursements Sun Life provided its roughly 1,900 policyholders between 2013 and 2016.

 Here are the top 10 costliest medical conditions ranked by value of stop-loss claims reimbursements.

1. Malignant neoplasm — $487.4 million

2. Leukemia/ lymphoma/multiple myeloma  — $219.2 million

3. Chronic/end-stage renal disease — $148.3 million

4. Congenital anomalies — $108.9 million

5. Transplant — $81.6 million

6. Disorders relating to short gestation and low birth weight — $75.9 million

7. Septicemia — $69.7 million

8. Complications of surgical and medical care — $62.9 million

9. Cerebrovascular disease — $58.8 million

10. Pulmonary collapse/ respiratory failure — $57.4 million
