Survey: Roughly 66% of millennials say government should pay for healthcare

A recent survey suggests the majority of people ages 18 to 30 believe the federal government should be responsible for providing health insurance to all Americans and that simply providing "access" to coverage is not enough, according to CBS News.

The GenForward poll is a survey conducted by the Black Youth Project at the University of Chicago and the Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research. Researchers randomly surveyed 1,833 adults aged 18 to 30 from Feb. 16 through March 6 using address-based sampling methods. Researchers then proceeded to interview respondents online or by phone.

Here are six takeaways from the survey.

1. Approximately 63 percent of those surveyed approved of the ACA, while 25 percent said they want the law repealed.

2. Seventy-five percent of those surveyed said the most popular element of the legislation was the mandate allowing young adults to say on their parents' health insurance until the age of 26.

3. Two-thirds of young people surveyed said it's the government's responsibility to ensure people have healthcare coverage. Approximately 63 percent said they want the government to increase spending to provide insurance to those that need it.

4. Slightly more than half (54 percent) said they opposed the ACA's requirement Americans purchase health insurance or pay a fine.

5. A little less than three-quarters (71 percent) claimed they were in favor of the law's Medicaid expansion.

6. Two-thirds of those surveyed said they favored the prohibition on denying people coverage based on their medical history, while 65 percent said they favor requiring insurance plans to cover the full cost of birth control.
