Arizona House legislators approved legislation to combat surprise billing Wednesday, tucson.com reports.
Here are four things to know.
1. House lawmakers passed the legislation by a 40-19 vote.
2. Under current Arizona law, patients have little support to fight insurance companies refusing to pay for procedures or services a patient received from out-of-network providers.
3. Sen. Debbie Lesko, R-Peoria, authored the bill. SB 1441 would allow the Arizona Department of Insurance to intervene in cases where patients were unknowingly out-of-network or a healthcare provider did not disclose its network status, charged more than the estimated cost and did not give the patient a chance to waive their rights to dispute the bill, according to the report.
4. The Arizona Senate will need to vote on the bill again, as the House passed the measure with some amendments.
