Shriners Hospitals for Children to build $47M facility

Shriners Hospitals for Children in Lexington, Ky., has announced it plans to build a $47 million ambulatory care center pursuant to an agreement with UK HealthCare in Lexington.

The new center will be operated by Shriners and will be located on the UK HealthCare campus. "Relocating to the UK HealthCare campus will bring together the pediatric orthopaedic expertise Shriners is known for with the top-rated specialty and subspecialty pediatric care at Kentucky Children's Hospital — a benefit to children with complex conditions," said Tony Lewgood, administrator of Shriners.

Shriners' current facility in Lexington was built in 1988, when more children required inpatient orthopedic care. However, with 78 percent of pediatric surgical cases being performed without requiring the child to stay overnight, the ambulatory care center will help meet the current needs of Shriners' patients. Children who do require an overnight stay will be admitted to Kentucky Children's Hospital.
