Sen. Sanders calls on citizens to back single-payer healthcare bill as co-sponsors

Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., is looking for "citizen co-sponsors" to support legislation to create a single-payer healthcare system, reports USA Today.

Mr. Sanders, a long-time single-payer advocate, plans to introduce a "Medicare-for-all" bill within the next month. The move comes in the wake of failed Senate GOP efforts to repeal and replace the ACA.

Mr. Sanders is asking supporters to "add your name as a citizen co-sponsor" of his bill "that will guarantee healthcare as a right for all Americans."

He made the request because "getting there will require nothing short of a political revolution," according to the report, which cites an email Mr. Sanders sent to supporters this week.

"It is time to wage a moral and political war against a dysfunctional healthcare system in this country," the Vermont senator wrote. "When I introduce the legislation, I want it to be clear that the American people believe healthcare should be a right in this country."

Single-payer healthcare has faced opposition from Republicans. While Mr. Sanders argues the initiative would save lives and cut annual healthcare spending by "hundreds of millions," Republicans have contended it is a "government takeover" of insurance that will be expensive and rely on taxpayer funding, reports USA Today
