Oregon lawmakers consider surprise billing legislation: 4 things to know

Kelly Gooch -

Oregon is targeting surprise medical bills through a newly proposed bill, The Bulletin reports.

Here are four things to know.

1. The proposed legislation would make it unlawful for out-of-network providers to bill patients for services provided at an in-network facility, according to the report.

2. Additionally, the measure would establish a system for paying out-of-network providers that insurers would have to comply with, the report notes.

3. The proposed measure is supported by insurance companies, but opposed by medical groups. Insurers contend balance billing is a huge problem, but physicians argue the issue is primarily driven by insurance carriers not paying them enough, The Bulletin reports.

4. One contested point regarding the issue is how much out-of-network providers should be paid for their services, the report states.
