Number of Uninsured Remained Flat From 2009-2010

The percentage of U.S. citizens without health insurance coverage only slightly increased from 2009-2010, despite the rise in poverty, according to data recently published by the U.S. Census Bureau.

The Census Bureau's data showed the nation's official poverty rate in 2010 was 15.1 percent, up from 14.3 percent in 2009. Meanwhile, the number of people without health insurance changed little, from 49.0 million in 2009 to 49.9 million in 2010. This change indicates the percentage of citizens without insurance rose from 16.1 percent to 16.3 percent.

Other key findings from the U.S. Census Bureau include the following:

•    From 2009-2010, the percentage of people covered by private health insurance declined from 64.5 percent to 64.0 percent, while the percentage covered by government health insurance increased from 30.6 percent to 31.0 percent.
•    The percentage covered by employment-based health insurance declined from 56.1 percent to 55.3 percent.
•    The percentage covered by Medicaid (15.9 percent) in 2010 was not statistically different from 2009.
