NH Senate OKs addition of nearly 70 mental health beds

The New Hampshire Senate gave initial approval for a plan that would address the state's shortage of mental health beds, according to a New Hampshire Union Leader report.

Here are four things to know.

1. On Thursday, the Senate approved an amendment attached to House Bill 400.

2. The amendment allows the state to spend an estimated $20 million over the next two years to provide state psychiatric facilities with additional inpatient beds, according to the report.

3. Specifically, the amendment includes the addition of nearly 70 new mental health beds and a new mobile crisis unit, reports WMUR-TV. The amendment also includes the reorganization of New Hampshire's division for children, youth and families.

4. The goal of the legislation is to address a mental health bed shortage in New Hampshire, particularly at New Hampshire Hospital, a psychiatric facility in Concord, according to the Union Leader.
