Mental health facilities in Kansas could receive financial boost from lottery tickets

Kansas mental health facilities may want more people to buy lottery tickets, as a proposed bill would allow lottery ticket sales from new machines to provide funding for the facilities, according to a KCUR report.

Here are four things to know.

1. Versions of House Bill 2313 have received the OK from both legislative chambers in Kansas.

2. Under the bill, a maximum of $4 million in proceeds from new lottery machines would go to mental health facilities next fiscal year, according to the report. That amount could increase a maximum of $8 million in the following years, the report states, but the funds could be lower if the new machines don't attract customers or business owners refrain from installing them.

3. Seventy-five percent of the lottery ticket machine proceeds would go to the crisis centers, according to the report. The centers are in Kansas City, Wichita and Topeka. The remaining 25 percent of the proceeds would go to the clubhouses, which are rehabilitation programs that assist mentally ill people, the report states.

4. The bill is not a done deal. Lawmakers must still come up with a final version of the bill, and Republican Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback would ultimately have to sign the bill into law, according to the report.
